PART VII
RISING TO THE OCCASION
A Sandwiched Nation
Following dismemberment of Mesopotamia in the immediate aftermath of
World War 1, Islamic States of the Abode of Peace denied the Assyrian
people access to their own traditional homeland by creating new
borderlines. The political borders stood as barriers. They separated the
Assyrians and barred them from crossing over to join their kinsfolk on
the other side of the border. The Assyrians have since been considered
as vanquished.
Islam continues to obstruct Assyria’s attempts to regain her
independence from Oriental colonialism. Islam refuses to recognise the
Assyrians as the indigenous of Assyria. So far, one of the 52 Islamic
States has always stood up and opposed a motion put to the UN General
Assembly to discuss the Assyrian issue. Islamic states always block off
attempts of the Assyrians to regain their basic human rights, through
international organizations. Islam is against revival of the Assyrian
heritage, language and culture. It is against the interest of Islam to
allow Assyria to survive, flourish and prosper in her ancestral
homeland. Assyria would stand as a threat to Islam’s expansionism.
It is harrowing to the Muslim usurper to see Assyria regain her freedom.
The Assyrians live in limbo in full view of the free and democratic
world, and with the full knowledge of the United Nations and the
international community, especially the two quartets: Rome, France,
Germany and Britain, and Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. They have been
the root cause of Assyria’s tragedy. Trading with people’s lives and
fortune, on such a horrendous scale of bigotry, is the epitome of crime.
The European Union, through the United Nations, needs to reactivate the
Assyrian case. They need to stand up and face their responsibility and
perform in good earnest in order to resolve the Assyrian outstanding
issue. They need to review and reconsider the Assyrian issue in good
faith. They need to reinstate the identity of their homeland to Assyria
to enable the dispersed Assyrians to return to their homeland.
The Assyrians are sandwiched between Western imperialism and Islamic
Oriental colonialism. The international community has a moral obligation
to relieve the Assyrians of this intolerable situation. There are scores
of tiny independent states scattered all over the world like Fiji,
Kuwait and Singapore whose landmass is much smaller and their population
less than Assyria. Assyria, with a population of about one and a half
million to two million, combined, meets all UN required criteria for
recognition. They are as eligible as any other nation to have their
territory of Khabur-Ninweh homeland returned to them.
